BODIES AND SUBWOOFERS (B.A.S.) is an ongoing investigation of the possible interactions between sub-bass, bodies, and subwoofers via a series of site-specific sound installations composed of subwoofer arrangements and sub-bass. Throughout organized sub-bass frequencies spoke by subwoofers, Stefanie Egedy explores how this particular frequency-range communicates with multiple types of bodies – not only human bodies, but also structural aspects of the space where the installation is presented, informing correlations between sound and constructional features (dimensions, materials, walls, columns, and floor).
Often without conscious awareness, bodies cultivate automation of perception. While usually inattentive to the complex network of physical resonances in its environment, bodies are sensitized through the materiality of larger sound waves. How interactions with sub-bass, and subwoofers offer new possibilities in creating and experiencing realities?
BODIES AND SUBWOOFERS (B.A.S.): Behind The Concept Is a compact narration of a selection of some key episodes that lead to the creation of B.A.S.. From a serious clubbing routine and relationship, as an extraction of the dance floor experience, to the contact with the ''Master of the Subs’’, Rafael Lins, the series of site-specific sound installations concept came to life after a decade of practices and obsession around subwoofers, bass and sub-bass frequencies.

"For some time now I've been conducting tests using bass and different sound processing. My interest rests in the sounds that are produced through this interaction. Very few sounds here are present whose origin is external to the sub-bass and bass sounds. With the combination of a Vermona MKII Performer and an Octatrack MKII, I managed those combinations, which also suffered a lot of interference from the Octatrack LFO's."

Conversations About Language is an investigation about the interaction between the verbal language and the sonorous and musical language. In each episode a combination of recorded conversations, texturized sounds and low-frequency sound waves is used as a way to possibly communicate something to the listener. Given the insufficiency of the words for the communication between beings and the continuous incongruous interpretations that we make of each other, the series sinks in the frontiers of the idea of understanding and dialogues with the dynamics of the interpretation.
Done with conversations recorded at a party and at university.
Presented live at Novas Frequências in Rio de Janeiro 12.07.2018
The new performance “Falha Comum” (“Common Fault”) is an allegory to the expectation of social performance, something recurrent in contemporary society. Through recordings of the sounds produced by different car engines, trebling and low, and the hitting of the pins, Egedy presents the conflict of a low-quality fuel usage scenario. The conflict is headed for the imminent explosion of the engines and constitutes a threat to the constant operation of these machines.

In the sound performance A PALAVRA DO OUTRO, Stefanie Egedy uses as the main material field recordings of her conversations with strangers approached in the street, that didn't know that they were being recorded. To start those conversations, the artist developed a series of strategies of how to approach those people that could work in this given context of action. Yet in some cases she couldn't develop a conversation. In those talks, she investigates, through the other's speech themes such as: God, the meaning of life and the reactionary political tendency in Brazil.
A conversation can be an exercise of building a meaning through the word. In this practice lies the task of trying to understand the other, the self and things via the negotiation of truths.
In such negotiation, one deals with the plasticity of truth, this is assumed and worked in the act of reorganization and redesign of the words, which brings another meaning to the conversation, but which still refers to the original. Filled with the truths of the speaker, words bring with them a meaning beyond themselves that are often hidden from the hearer. Thus, the work, oscillating between understanding and confusion, presents the conversations, sometimes distorted and in dialogue with low-frequency sound waves and other electronic sound textures.

The álbum Escúpulos has 4 tracks. Field recordings and synthesizers are the main elements used for the construction of the pieces, whose base are straight low frequency sound lines with a few oscillations. Through consistent sounds that unfold, a hypnotic mass is sculpted and transits by dense sounds and dark shades.

Recordings of conversations as the main material used in Conversações. In the Project, the supposed linearity of a talk is destructed, making it not systematic and far from a sense. Those recordings dialogue with draws of low frequency sound waves that varies its speed.

Proposal of delightment with the accent of others. Recordings of conversations are used as the basis material for the construction of a digital moment. The conversations goes through a granular synthesis process and together with a straight line of low sound frequencies composes a piece that makes surgical use of the nuances of the voice.
